""Challenges for language teachers towards the millennium'' was the theme of our firstinternational research conference held on 27-29 May 1999 at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University,Çanakkale, Turkey. It was the first time we attempted to organise such an international event inÇanakkale and the first research conference as such in Turkey. In organising the conference, weintended to gather ELT researchers and practitioners and create an academic atmosphere in whichpractice and research could meet.
